Similar in many respects to the Niepoort, but a bit lighter and not quite as smooth in its transitions. Again, nice, but nothing special.

This is the only ’82 I’ve ever tasted, some years ago a bottle found in a Long Island liquor store. That was very light and simple, with artificial sugar. What you have written is consistent with that.

This wine grew on me as the night wore on, and eventually pipped the Eira Velha and Niepoort to be my WOTN
A good all round port, and a sound choice for current drinking.

I like Noval 1982 and still claim this is as good as Noval 1985. On the other hand Noval 1985 is very good but .... The Noval 1982 is smooth, balanced, has still a deep red colour and as a whole is very pleasant to drink (not too complex). On this occasion due to the long decanting time I guess we had not much of the fruit flavours which otherwise would have made the port in my eyes even nicer.

No nose at all. Nice dark colour though. Subtle red fruit. A little too understated.

Re: 1982 Quinta do Noval
Solid red colour; slightly harsh on the nose, showing charcoal ash and redcurrant. Sweet attack, with a strong acidic core and some gentle tannin showing through. Good mulberry and floral tones on the palate with some lovely layers giving good development. Spicy aftertaste, lively tannins full of slightly tart redcurrant. 89/100.
