Help required to improve port collection

Post by Alex M »

I have been collecting port for a few years but it is only in the recent months that I have attempted to truely expand my collection. I am asking for your reccommendation for good QPR port for the following vintages;
1992
1983
1980
1977
1975(if possible!)

I think that anything older than this is optimistic for my price range.

I already have cases of the following wines;

2003 Croft
2000 Fonseca
1997 Warre
1994 Vesuvio
1991 Morgan/Vesuvio
1987 Grahams Malvados
1985 Fonseca

1992 - my current impression is that the better ports are over-priced, so not much QPR here.

1983 - the Symington wines - especially Graham & Warre - are very good, although prices have been on the march of late. Offley is very good value.

1980 - Dow and Graham are the kings of this vintage, standing well above the rest. Prices are generally tolerable, considering their quality.

1977 - there's not much QPR to be found in this vintage, but look out for Smith Woodhouse.

1975 - there are good ports to found from this vintage, but the market is beginning to forget it's reputation and prices have been running high. Fonseca is good, as is Quarles Harris. Graham is tolerable. I'm currently drinking my first ever Noval '75, which would be quite respectable, were it not very slightly corked... :cry: But for QPR from '75, the one to go for is Croft.

For 1980, I would consider Ferreira, Taylor and Sandeman- all can be had a decent prices.

For 1977, look for Niepoort if you can find it. One of the best of the vintage.

1992 was declared by Taylor Fladgate, and generally it is Fonseca and Taylor that are attracting high prices. If you can find the second tier wines from the Symington Family Estates, these might represent good value for money - Malvedos, for example. 1992 was also declared by Niepoort and Noval and probably a wide range of other smaller shippers.

1980 - decent wines generally, but best to avoid Taylor and Fonseca as these are over-priced for their quality

1977 - I would suggest Smith Woodhouse, Gould Campbell or Quarles Harris as the value for money targets.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Managed to acquire a case of 1983 BBR port, bottled by Warres, for a reasonable price.
