2000 Ramos Pinto

Post by jdaw1 » 22:14 Fri 08 Apr 2011

Tasted at The Big Fortified Tasting, a trade fair in London at Glaziers Hall on Wed 06 April 2011 (Review thread, containing links to other tasting notes). This being a large trade-fair event, tasting notes generally brief.

RP00. Red, 70% opacity. Rather closed. Mid weight; rough mid- and late-palate; heat late-palate. Apparently £50, which is far too much.

The damsel in charge said that RP is not hyphenated, but Derek, flicking through her collection of pictures of posters, found some that were and some that weren’t.

Ramos Pinto 2000 VP
Now red rather than purple. On the nose, there is quite a lot of heat. In the mouth, a great amount of sweetness, and soft strawberries, giving a sensation of eating boiled sweets. The tannins are almost not present. A nice Port, but somewhat less than I might have hoped.

£50 a bottle? At £20 we might be talking...

Nice red core running from the centre to the rim, opaque. Floral and elegant nose, smelling of greengages. Elegant and restrained palate, the fruit shows well but the acidity dominates; lots of red cherry and very soft tannins. A big aftertaste and a huge finish with a nice balance of tannin and fruit. There are signs that this might be closing down. 88/100.
Top Port in 2017 (so far): Graham Stone Terraces 2015 and Quinta do Vesuvio 1994
2016 Port of the year: Cockburn 1908
