1952 Dalva Golden White Colheita (bottled 2009)
Tasted at C. da Silva's new tasting house in Vila Nova de Gaia. Bottled October 2009. Mid-depth burnt sienna in colour, 20% opaque. A dense nose, lots of pear and some pine resin. Very dense in texture, huge flavours of wine with masses of marmalade, quince bitters and soft pine resin. Some tingling aftertaste, then dry cheeks and a warm glow with a mouthfull of caramel and orange liquer. This really is a lovely wine. 92/100. Drunk 28 Sep 2010.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

It definitely is a superb Colheita, but having had the priviledge to taste the 37s of Niepoort, Kopke, Andresen and Noval puts even the 52 Golden White into another perspective.
Extremely well made port, much better than the follower from 63, but I consider this to be somewhere at 18,5-19/20

I agree - the '52 Dalva Golden White is among the very best (if not the very best) White Colheita available, but I usually have it around 94-95 points. The 1937 tawny Colheitas really change one's perspective on a lot of other Ports. I'll add the 1937 Warre to Axel's list - just mind blowingly good.Axel P wrote:It definitely is a superb Colheita, but having had the priviledge to taste the 37s of Niepoort, Kopke, Andresen and Noval puts even the 52 Golden White into another perspective.

It will be interesting to see how the '63 Dalva Golden White evolves over the next 10 years. I think it may close the gap, but I don't think it will ever be quite as good as the '52 is now.

How many white colheitas are there out there? Apart from the Dalvas, I've seen some from Santa Eufémia and tried a 1933 Calem, but didn't think there were many more (if any) in existence.Glenn E. wrote:I agree - the '52 Dalva Golden White is among the very best (if not the very best) White Colheita available, but I usually have it around 94-95 points.

Several, at least. I've had a couple of different ones from Krohn (their 1964 is at least the equal of the 1963 Dalva in my opinion) and I could swear that I've seen Kopkes before but can't at the moment find any.JacobH wrote:How many white colheitas are there out there? They're definitely rare but not impossible to find. The White TWAIOA are much more common now that they've been accepted by the IVdP.

Re: 1952 Dalva Golden White colheita
’52 Dalva is not going to be around another 5 years I bet. As lovely as it is, I’ve found it to be fading over the last few years. 5 years ago was the first time I tried it and subsequent annual bottles have been a tad less fabulous each year. Granted the lowest rating is still 94ish points.
When drinking it only seldom, it could be my initial memory vaulted it higher and it’s really just as good as the first time I have had it? Dalva has the Rui Paula Colheita which will be another classic from this house.
I thought Kopke’s white is a 10 year, not a Colhieta?

Kopke has a full lineup of 10- through 40-yr old whites which I saw all together at Porto Clerigos. (Near the Clerigos tower in Porto. Duh.) But for some reason I keep thinking I've seen a dated white Colheita from them as well. Perhaps not, it could just be my faulty memory.mosesbotbol wrote:I thought Kopke’s white is a 10 year, not a Colhieta?

The ’52 has been variable for me. At its best, as good as the best. But sometimes markedly less so.
