Tasted at The Big Fortified Tasting, a trade fair in London at Glaziers Hall on Wed 06 April 2011 (Review thread, containing links to other tasting notes). This being a large trade-fair event, tasting notes generally brief.
Niepoort 1977 Garrafeira
A deep orange in the middle which fades to paleness at the edge. The most extraordinary aroma, which lasts for a great length of time: a combination of hazelnuts, and some fruit. In the mouth, it is similar, there is a combination of a nuttiness that would come from the tawny-style (with, again, hazelnuts predominating) and some cherries and other fruits remaining. The sugar is good: not too cloying. Very drinkable with an endless after-taste that demands concentration. Fabulous.

Re: 1977 Niepoort Garrafeira
Not yet released. Pale, burnt sienna in colour, 40% opaque. Dates and sultanas on the nose. Big mouth flavours, clearly oxidative in nature - lovely dates and walnut skins; big chewy finish. This is a big and impressive wine. 93/100
