1955 Cockburn vintage port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Bottled by Peatling & Cawdron; decanted cleanly of a huge deposit of very solid sediment. Deep, rich burnt sienna in colour; 30% opaque. A little hot on the nose, cherries and spearmint. Medium weight, lovely texture in the mouth, quite thick. Lovely balance, neither sweet nor acidic; very dry; gains weight on the palate. Lots of burnt orange flavours. Hot aftertaste, with the heat fading only slowly. Huge finish, very spicy and dry, masses of concentrated bitter-orange, vanilla and burnt sugar. A very good wine at the peak of its drinking plateau. 92/100. Drunk 27 May 2011 after 3 hours decanting.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Knowing what I know, I do not think a magnificent glass of port such as that described above has been more deserved.

Enjoy! :D

That is most kind of you.

By the time the port had been sitting in the decanter and glass for 5 hours, it had gained depth and flavour and deserved an extra point on its score. 93/100.
