A very interesting evening. The wine of the night was the Graham 1945, despite the poor ullage on the bottle, and the two colheitas showed very well. A fun evening, made all the more enjoyable by Pati at The Crusting Pipe spotting that we had reserved a table and deciding to order the bone-in ribeye steaks for us without us having asked this. Thank you Pati!

A great selection of wines, and the opening of one of the handful of bottles of the undeclared Cockburn 1966 was a real privilege - thank you Tom! A lovely evening and a good way to celebrate watching a number of records being broken at the Oval during the day.

Wine of the night scores were (each person voting 1, 2 and 3 to give 3, 2 and 1 points):
Graham 1945 - 18 points
Cockburn 1966 - 8 points
Cockburn 1967 - 6 points
Graham 1980 - 6 points
Borges 1980 - 3 points
Dalva 1985 colheita - 2 points
Terra Feita 1986 - 1 point

Decanting times were:
Dalva 1985 colheita - pop and pour
Unknown madeira - 2 pm
Cockburn 1967 - 2 pm
Cockburn 1966 - 2 pm
Warre 1980 - 6:30 pm
Royal Oporto 1963 colheita - 8 pm
Graham 1945 - 7 am
Terra Feita 1986 - noon
Borges 1980 - 7 pm
Port Society Finest Reserve NV - pop and pour
Graham 1980 - 7 am
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

The 1966/1967 Cockburn comparison was particularly interesting - on initial impressions I preferred the '66 but thought that the '67 held up better in the glass throughout the evening. Thank you to Tom/Cookie for the rare opportunity of tasting the '66, and for pairing it with the '67. I do think the '67 is a very nice bottle, and on QPR perhaps one of the best ways to enjoy properly mature port.

The highlight was, of course, the G45, very generously provided by AHB - if that's what such a badly ullaged bottle can taste like, perhaps I have become too conservative with fill levels when making purchasing decisions...

As a side note, the tunnel does get a bit hot mid-summer - to the extent that it is not particularly beneficial for the ports.
