1999 Smith Woodhouse LBV (unfiltered)
Bottled unfiltered in 2003. Deep red in colour, young and opaque. Rich on the nose, full of blackcurrant and applemint. A touch hollow on entry, but then a full bodied and tannic port reveals itself, accompanied by plenty of fruit and acidity - lovely floral tones in the blackcurrant fruit. A big aftertaste and huge finish, tingling aniseed and black chocolate that lasts an immense time. A big port drunk far too early in its life - give it at least another 5 years! 89/100. Drunk 25 August 2011.
Top 2025: Quevedo 1972 Colheita, b.2024. Just as good as Niepoort 1900!
2026: DR Very Old White, Graham Stone Terraces 2011, Quevedo Branco 1986 b.2026
