1976 Taylor Vargellas
Opened a bottle of this about 3 hours ago. A proper tasting note will follow, but this is damned good stuff.

Re: 1976 Vargellas vintage port
Is it in the same league as 76 Guimaraens?

It is of comparable quality to the FG, maybe a tiny bit less concentrated. What was remarkable was the amount of weight and depth of flavour it put between 3 and 6 hours in the decanter.

Is it as unusually dark as the FG?

Red mahogany colour, mature looking; 50% opaque. Lively and spicy nose, full of cedar wood and plums - very attractive. Full bodied, full flavoured impact; masses of fruit and hugely flavoured. Gently spicy tannins, full of rose hip flavours. Very tasty. Big aftertaste and a long, full finish. Very, very impressive wine. 92/100. Drunk 22 Nov 2011 after three hours in the decanter.

Re: 1976 Vargellas vintage port
interesting, I wonder if it has the same problems as the FG 76 with bt variation. At the FG tasting we were lucky to have a very good bt. Usually it takes 2-3 attempts/bts to have such an experience.
I know we did do a Vargellas vertical ; correction preview ; but why not do a proper examination of Malvedos/FG standards with Derek's "complete" hat on?
