1977 Cálem

In honour of the presence in London of Dr Dirk Bruns, people gathered at the The Crusting Pipe on Tuesday 3rd January 2012 to taste some 1977s. Links:

Cá77: decanted 14:55. Red, 50% opaque. A weird smell, with lots of milk chocolate, some Sauternes, and VA. Rough early palate, lots of heat, rather short, but good sweetness. Much improved by time in the glass, fading the roughness, and revealing leather — though DB said “tobacco”. I thought more like leather.

Initially unattractive, with VA and some roughness, but improved in glass over 2-3 hours. Quite sweet and, although evolved in colour, there was still some noticeable tannins. Thoroughly acceptable by end of evening *** (88)

Deep red, almost (95%) opaque. This has a touch of VA on the nose and in the palate. Medium bodied, with a sweet aftertaste that slightly shows the tannins as a dryness on the cheeks and brings a long, soft white cherry and chocolate finish. More time in the glass was rewarded with the VA becoming more subdued and the white cherry showing nicely in the palate. 85/100. 6 hour decant.
