Newcastle Brown.

I have to say I like Newcastle Brown. But I cant see why its worthy of the mythical status, and in reality would have to say it's quite plain and over-priced. Still got a couple of bottles in the fridge, mind.

I quite like the Newcastle myself, although I would agree that it's not really "special". Must be something there though.

We do not get tons of UK ale imports her, although a fair enough selection. I have probably tried every UK import over the course of the last 25 years, and there are a couple which come back as favorites for me over time:

Smiths; Taddy porter, oatmeal stout, and pale ale
Youngs; Double chocolate stout

I also like the Oatmeal Stout, Double chocolate stout and Taddy Porter. I'm not a big fan of pale ales or Hefiewizen (sp?) beers though. Never had the ooth Sheaf Stout....have to track it down and give it a go.

I think this beer enjoyed some cult status (and respect) on the back of sticking with pint bottles when other brewers sought ways to cheat their customers for bottled beer by metricating (and reducing) the contents.

But if the truth be told, it's now a dinosaur - the quality does not justify any sort of premium value - in the Uk, at least...

Newcastle brown ale is too commercial in taste and value.My favourite beer used to be Marston's merrie monk.But now I quite like speckled hen.

Trying to get hold of Merry Monk has always been a problem, and I live in the Midlands. It is the strangest of beasts, a strong mild. I really liked it but it does bite you on the bum after a few.

The Tooth Sheaf Stout was a favorite in high school and undergraduate. I had not had it for many a year (well, decades really) when recently I flew to Seattle to meet freinds and drive to Whistler BC for some snowboarding. I believe it may have actually been a Wallmart, only the second I have been in (the other was between Reno and Mammoth on another snowboarding trip). Not quite as good as I remembered, but still a nice stout!
