1994 Gould Campbell

Post by g-man »

popped and poured

Nose of violets, condensed milk and freshly crushed black pepper.
Spicy, firm tannins fleshed out with some milk chocolate and some more spirits. It has a menthol like finish that lingers around then adds a touch of very bitter dark chocolate cocoa powder at the end.

Way too young and not fruity enough.

I'll hold it and try again in 24 hours

24 hrs later

A pruney but muted nose with signs of menthol from the spirits still lingering around.

Grapey milk chocolate evolves on the palate, but the tannins still are very apparent and the noticeable spirits still show up on the back end.

Tastes like an 84-86 now.

I had another glass that was left in open air for 24 hours.

Sour raisins, no spirits still very noticeable tannins and a rough mid palate.

Though this is for my note purposes, i wouldn't take this one as a proper TN.

Your description makes me think this is a "tuck it away for 5 years before trying again" port. Is that a fair thing to say?
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

yes, I broke a case i won at auction to try it.

I'm hoping the fruit portion is just the dumb phase and after 24 hours more of the fruit did appear but it was hidden behind the tannins and spirits.

So i'd defintely wouldn't even bother touching this until the tannins resolve some more which doesn't feel like any time soon.
