I went to 6 different branches of Tesco yesterday, chasing down bottles of cheap Champagne. A couple of the stores still had stocks of the Croft 04 LBV, but back at the full price of £8.49 per half.

I went to 6 different branches of Tesco yesterday, chasing down bottles of cheap Champagne. A couple of the stores still had stocks of the Croft 04 LBV, but back at the full price of £8.49 per half.

I visited two Tesco stores today and found 17 half bottles of Croft 2004 LBV priced at £4 each. I bought all of them. The best news is that Tesco are currently giving 25% discount when you buy 6 bottles so I got them for £3 each

I also bought 8 bottles of Taylor 2005 LBV which are currently on sale at £10.95, reduced from 13.95. When I bought the Croft LBV halves I was given a £9 discount voucher. So, when I bought the Taylor LBVs the price was £7.01 per bottle

I also bought a Taylor 1985 amongst the above purchases which was discounted from £81 to £60.75 as a result of the bulk discount. Not cheap, but not too bad for retail.

When I bought the Taylor LBV they gave me another £9 discount voucher - so I need to go back tomorrow

DRT - I think the 25% off finishes today which is worth bearing in mind.

I picked up 12 of the Taylors 2005 LBV last night and 6 of the own brand Tawny which is actually thoroughly drinkable. The tawny netted to about £4.70. Plus I got a £10 off and had a £10 off from the previous day's Dow Finest case.

That should keep in port refreshment until the end of the month at least.

I never understand these predictions you read in magazines about Vintage Port. If my Vesuvio 2009 has peaked before its 25th birthday, I would be somewhat disappointed and think there was probably something wrong with it. Do these commentators not drink any mature Vintage Port; or is there some sort of editorial pressure not to write “will continue to evolve and mature for at least 40 years”?

Hey--I don't write them I just pass them along...but I agree, these projections are usually ridiculous and useless other than a laugh.

The Waitrose food hall in Westfield Stratford has heavily discounted portuguese fortified wines - if you are close by and have time today or tomorrow I suggest that you hot-foot it down there and pick these up!

Quinta de Noval 10yr Tawny: reduced from ~£19 to £11 (at least 2 left on the shelf)
Henriques and Henriques 15 yr Bual: reduced from ~£19 to £11.50 (at least 4 left on the shelf)

These are individually reduced bottles (i.e. not a promotion, so probably unavailable at other stores). I tried to clear the shelf, but there are only so many bottles that one can carry (having a child's pushchair helped!),

Finding these really was the highlight of an otherwise very depressing visit to this temple of consumerism.

Hmm...I might try to drop by tomorrow if I have time; it’s very close to where I live (and, if you think it’s depressing, think what Stratford was like before they built it!).

I’m always very impressed by the wine selection at that Waitrose; it’s much better than many chain and independent wine merchants with a good selection of sweet and fortified wines from around the world.

Sainsbury appear to have repriced their Taste the Difference 2003 vintage port to £25 (from £35) per bottle. This is splendid port, one which I thoroughly recommend from personal experience and now quite attractively sensibly priced. One to buy and drink as it still has plenty of youthful baby fat, but it will probably shut down in 2-3 years time when it will then reward patience by being locked away for 8-10 years.

One of the retailers with whom we have a good relationship has asked whether anyone on the port forum might be interested in a 6-pack of Vesuvio 2000 @ £180 in bond. There are 7 available, not yet listed on the retailer's website.

Anyone have any top tips for NV? Down to double figures of "every day" port and looking for recommendations. Also anyone feeling the need to offload VP, please PM me with details if you want to save the time and hassle of auctioning it.

The Niepoort rby is fantastic Z. it's around 11$ stateside which should put it around the £5-7 range.

Quevedo's LBV is also a winner and could be passed off for some other house's vp.

Disclosure, I will be the NY distributor of quevedo wines.

Taylor's First Estate came out as a surprise winner from the Ruby Reserve tasting that was held jointly across TPF and FTLOP in January. It's widely available from the supermarkets and so might be easy to try out. Cockburn Special Reserve is also back in form now that the Symingtons have taken over its production. Again widely available. Try these two and let us know what you thing.

Alternatively, the Port Society have a ruby reserve that is rather good, blended by Quevedo. Tom can give you details of this.

Laithwaites are selling the Andresen 20 yr Tawny for £28 single bottle price.

This is a very nice 20yr indeed, and combined with one of Laithwaite's frequent "£40-off" vouchers on orders over £100 (voucher code "DIRECT2" worked for me last week), you can have 4 delivered for £80 all-in (including postage).

I had the first of mine over the weekend, and think this represents rather good value-for-money for a quality tawny (hence posting here...).

I meant to thank you for posting this - i picked up a couple for me and a couple for another on this board. Were delivered the other week
- they look like nice bottles. Haven't tried yet.
