1970 Berry Brothers

Post by jdaw1 »

RAYC opened a badly ullaged bottle, and, splendid fellow, concluded that it was too good not to share. So we met in the Bung Hole, and agreed on a team note.

Warre. Glorious red, 40% opaque. Nose fresh but obviously aged, sweet, summer fruits. The same present in the palate: red berries, perhaps strawberry, good sweetness, a bit light and delicate, but with enough backbone to remain excellent. The whole flavour had excellent persistence. But don’t wait long no more cellar time required.

Would that be due to the badly ullaged bottle condition?

Possibly...it was approx 3-4mm below join of neck and shoulder. Full penetration of wine through cork, though very even and obvious from sound on uncorking that seal was still good.

WS1 reported a bottle he opened from the same stash to be similar in terms of evolution.

For me **** (91)

There are some very high standards being imposed here! 3-4mm below neck would probably be categorised in my cellar as top shoulder and therefore stock capable of being cellared further while other weaker bottles are being opened and consumed.

Quite possibly a fair comment - it was a bottle that i would probably have passed over if i was buying a single bottle, but i was not suprised to see one out of a case of 12 from the 1970 vintage at that level.

My comment wasn't meant (and I'm sure wasn't taken) to be critical in any way - just surprise being expressed.
