1908 Cockburn vintage port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Burnt orange colour with a green toned rim; 40% opaque. Initially slightly smelly on the nose with a touch of bottle stink (which 20 minutes in the glass allows to develop into scents of pine and rosemary) but underneath is a lovely butterscotch and seville orange marmalade. Very enticing. Sweet burnt sugar on the initial impact, immediately followed by huge levels of concentrated orange that swamp the palate with its strong acidic core. This has a lovely thick texture and a huge palate. Huge mouthwatering aftertaste, brimful of bitter orange marmalade. Wonderful port, mature and fabulous. 96/100. 11-Jun-12. 1 hour decant.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Ck08. Orange, 20% opaque. Nose had floral notes, citrus, and varnish. Later I questioned whether the nose was pine resin rather than varnish. To taste a lovely acidic freshness. Unctuous rich marmalade. Big and rich, very long. Heat mid-palate. Thoroughly excellent. DMS: ‟extraordinarily mouthfilling”. But after half an hour it was drying out. Short decant time recommended.
