1970 Taylor Vargellas

1970 Taylor Vargellas, consumed Thursday 14th February 2008, and from the collection of Jay, who did double-duty as our excellent host.

Much more translucent than the Taylor 1970, and nosing of ‟spearmint!”. Very long, and smoothly minty the source of Taylor’s mint, presumably. Not as rich as the Taylor, but just as long, and very delicious. Another taster rightly identified ‟ginger”.

A fabulous port that just blew me away. I loved this and it was a close run thing for port of the night between this and the Niepoort. The Niepoort just got the nod due to its heavier body and thicker texture. However, that does not really do justice to the beauty of this port. This is a beautiful and fully mature port that shows all the elegance and refinement of a fantastic port at full maturity. Very good and certainly one to be sought out if ever it becomes available. Given the structure and the amount of fruit in this port, I would expect this to drink really nicely for the next 20 years. Drunk 14 February 2008 with a 9 hour decant.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Does anybody know where one could purchase a bottle from? Other than waiting out via the auction route...

They do crop up occasionally at both auction and from certain retailers, like Wilkinson's. It is just a case of being (very) patient.
