1972 Fonseca Guimaraens
Deep orange-rose with lovely bricking; put on quite a lot of colour in the decanter, changing from about 15% opaque to about 30%. At first nosing strongly of alcohol and appearing quite medicinal, after an hour in the decanter this developed a fruity nose if slighty dirty nose. Gentle entry, medium bodied but with a concentrated flavour and tangy core; sweet and thick, but balanced and with no tannin left. Strong and powerful aftertaste, with a long and pronounced finish of slightly bitter mandarin. Surprisingly good port considering the reputation of the vintage and the best bottle of FG72 I have had the good fortune to drink. Drunk 25-Aug-12 with a decant of 1 hour.
