2000 Sandeman Vau
2000 Sandeman Vau
2000 Sandeman Vau, double magnum
SV00, 3L, at d+10 minutes. Lovely red-purple, slightly more purple and more opaque than the half-bottle tasted against it. Let’s say 90%, rather than 85%. Good nose, different to the half, fuller, more berry and plum, less cherry. Lots of young fruit. Big rich unctuous flavour, then some dryness mid- to late-palate. Big to the end. Of the half I wrote that it ‟promises to be satisfactory drinking”, but this promises to be more satisfactory. Really a very big ending, the fruit of young port without being dumb. Very very satisfactory drinking, without the half’s quantity problem.
Photographs and updates to follow.

Back label.

Selo, with black plastic foil in background. The double magnum did not have an inner metal foil.

The cork shattered. Not good. (The coin is a £1 coin, diameter 22½mm ≈ 0.8858″.)
Re: 2000 Sandeman Vau, double magnum
Recipe (from Mrs Beeton): start with a proper size bottle. Pour from it two full decanters, perhaps over-full. This is what should remain.

Which is the big brother?

SV00 from 300cl, at about d+4hr (so after some champagne), and from the same glass so much aired: dark berries dominant in the nose. Rich sweetness at the start of the palate, then some cedar, and some candied sweetness. Rich to a much-delayed end.
And I have a whole decanter of it to my side, and more downstairs. Good news.

Disgrace: I haven’t finished it. Yet it is still delicious.
Obviously there will have to be a report tomorrow.

Thanks for posting Julian. I just had the 97 from a reg bottle compared to the half and there was a huge difference although both were not great.

The proper-size bottle still drinking very well at lunchtime the following day. Slightly drier, though still rich, with slightly-tart cherries showing, and less berry.
Re: 2000 Sandeman Vau, double magnum
Still going. Softer. Sweeter. Increasingly High-toned, as Broadbent would say, which means that there is a slight hint of mint. Still lovely drinking.
These double-magnum things really are an excellent size.

This isn't good. You were far more thorough when I visited you in Paris.jdaw1 wrote:Disgrace: I haven’t finished it.
