2003 Taylor LBV

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Filtered style LBV. Deep red colour, opaque centre, red rim. Slightly harsh nose, astringent menthol dominating. Medium to light bodied entry, lots of dry tannins and modest levels of fruit. This is unbalanced on the palate - perhaps it is shutting down. There is some ripe cherry late on the palate, but this requires considerable patience to find. Hot on the aftertaste, burning the back of the throat, then a warming sensation on the gullet before the tannins dominate the dry cocoa and red cherry finish. Acceptable, but not showing well. 82/100. Drunk 06-Jan-13. Decanted 4 hours
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

This isn't typical of my memory of this wine, which has showed very well on previous occasions. Perhaps a dud bottle?

It could be - but I was wondering whether it has closed down. Does filtered LBV shut down?

This showed all the hallmoarks I would expect to find in a wine that had closed down - subdued fruit, lots of angular acidity, pronounced tannins.

I have plenty left in the decanter (it's intended to last the week) so I will revisit tonight and see if additional decanter time has allowed the port to pull itself together.

That sounds atypical with respect to the pronounced tannins. I don't recall that.

This is one of my favorite LBVs, and your note doesn't sound at all like my typical experience with it. It doesn't sound to me like it is closing down, either, so my guess is that you got a bad bottle somehow. :(

It did get better after a couple of days, but never showed very well - too much acidity and a little light on fruit. 85/100 would be the top score this earned.
