Vintage Port 2009 prices

Post by art05 »

Hello,

I'm quite new in port wine but on my way to explore the different styles. But i did not have yet the opportunity to try a vintage port.

Now to my question: My daughter was born in 2009. So i thought of buying some bottles of 2009 vintage port for some occasions in her future.
It seems that there are different opinions between the port houses, if 2009 was a vintage year or not.

But i had to realize, that the prices for 2009 vintage are much higher (~75+ EUR) than for other vintage ports of the last decade and even older. Now i'm asking me, how can this be?

If you could enlighten me a bit on this topic, I'd really appreciate.

Welcome to The Port Forum!

I think you must be living somewhere that has very high prices for Vintage Port :(

I just had a quick look on www.wine-searcher.com and all of the brands that declared 2009 are on sale in the UK for between £23 and £50 per bottle. Taylor and Fonseca are both available at £37 per bottle including tax.

I hope you can find something at those prices where you are.

Looking at wine-searcher.com i get for the "fonseca vintage port 2009" an avg price: $ 95 (750ml bottle, ex-tax)
Restricting the merchants to UK the avg price is $ 58 (750ml bottle, ex-tax).

It seems to be very country dependent, even the web search.

Here is a link to the cheapest Fonseca 2009: http://shop.bwiltd.co.uk/product/19457/fonseca-2009/

Are you using the Pro version of wine searcher? It gives many more results than the free version and is probably why your averages are higher than those I am seeing here.

Welcome to the boards,

my personal feeling was that the 2009 had some stellar wines. The 2009 Taylor in particular was what I felt was the stand out from the vintage.

2009 did produce some very good vintage ports, but as with anything you decide to buy, look at different suppliers and choose one who gives you a good price and good service.

And also plan where you will store the port you buy for the next 20 years while your daughter grows up! Some wine merchants (like Berry Brothers or Seckfords in the UK) will store your wine for you (at a cost of about GBP 7-10 per case per year). There is nothing to stop you from buying in the UK, having the merchant store the wine for you and you can then plan a time in the next 20 years when you can travel to the UK and collect your port.

And if you do it this way, you can also buy "in-bond" and delay paying UK duty and UK VAT until the time when you do want to collect the wine.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

@DRT: I just used the free web-search.

@AHT: This is a very interesting option. I will think about it ..

Will there be a 2009 colheita too? Or is it impossible to tell that at the moment?

I am also based in Germany. If you want to have my impression from the 09 Ports, look at: http://www.worldofport.de/Download/Worl ... T_2009.pdf

If you are interested in Ports and available to be in Leverkusen next Saturday, let me know. Also for 2009s contact me if you wish.

It is too early to tell. Colheita port must spend more than 6 years in barrel before it can be bottled as colheita port. But it's worth asking port producers (via their websites) whether they have any port from the 2009 vintage which they are storing to make a colheita.

Right from the first cask samples I knew that 2009 was going to be a stellar vintage..

..but being only two years after 2007, it wasn't really needed; but the Taylor Fladgate partnership saw it's quality, as did Niepoort.

The Symingtons only declared Warre from their arsenal of blend brands, for historical reasons - despite having superb juice from Malvedos that could have produced a first class Graham - I feel sure they will regret not declaring, given time..

So, 2009 Malvedos. When will it be released and how does one reasonably procure? :D
