1980 Warre

Post by jdaw1 »

Oscar visited London, so the team sampled some VPs and some stuff described as ‟brown sticky stuff”. Some were served sighted, some were blind.

W80, brought by new boy IDJ, and served blind. I wrote ‟this century colour”. Described by THRA (who was standing in for RMW) as ‟a young Turk”. Very young, with fruit still very closed. Somebody guessed D00, before it was generally recalled that guidance had been given of ≤1992. Without that recollection, I would have thought a ’97; with I chose ’91. And, heavens above, it was a 1980. My! Some 32½ years after the harvest, this is so dark, so closed, so young, so full of promise for the future rather than for the present. Wow.

Intense colour, very dark, wery red and opaque. Subdued nose, still showing some youthful blackcurrant. Dense and packed on the palate. Full of fruit and with lots of charcoal tannins. Delicious palate - closed but with so much potential. Big aftertaste, heat on the finish. This is a real brooding monster with a big finish. Served blind this was guessed to be Fonseca 1992. 92/100.
