1952 Niepoort Colheita

Post by jdaw1 »

Oscar visited London, so the team sampled some VPs and some stuff described as ‟brown sticky stuff”. Some were served sighted, some were blind.

Ni52c, brought by CMAG. And my, this is full of rich exotic fruit, including pineapple in which sense resembling just like a Château La Tour Blanche 1996. Mid-weight by port standards, so massive by sauternes standards, and lovely.

Bottling date not known. Deep brown centre, opaque from the fine particulate making it appear a bit soupy. Smelly on the nose, dominated by bottle stink and wet nappies. Hollow entry, waxy flavours; harshly acidic and unbalanced. Work on the palate improves the flavour profile, but not by too much. Harsh and acidic afttertaste and finish. Not great. 83/100.

How could I possibly have had such a different impression of this wine from JDAW? Could we have been drinking different wines?
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

AHB, in the TN for 1978 Krohn colheita, wrote:I am rather worried that either I or JDAW managed to swap our glasses of 1978 Krohn and 1952 Niepoort around. Oh well, likely we'll never know unless someone else has notes they can post!
