2008 Chateau Palmer, Margaux
51% merlot, 41% cabernet sauvignon, 8% petit verdot (the latter providing tannic structure). Slightly deeper in colour than the Alter Ego from the same vintage and a touch more youthful. Lots of ash and sawdust on the nose with cedar and little fruit. Initially smooth on the palate before dry charcoal tannins take hold. The fruit is restrained, smoky and hidden by the woodiness. Too young to be properly resolved. Very chewy aftertaste and finish, which lingers on the teeth and gums. Great length, but a bit woody. Definitely a bigger wine than the Alter Ego. 89/100.
