1970 Taylor

Post by djewesbury »

A small group gathered at the Bung Hole for a blind tasting, DJ being in town for the evening. We were joined by two guests: AHB being able to join at the last minute, he was accompanied by Mrs B; DJ brought his friend Richard West.

The line-up of bottles was interesting: five were from the same year, three were the same wine and two were decanted from the same bottle.
50%, browny, with a pinkish line at the rim.
Wonderfully round, chunky with lychees, very big.

Until recently Quellyn Roberts was a well known Chester wine merchants but in the early 20th century they also sold beers and cider as well as wine and fine champagnes and had shops in West Kirby on the Wirral and Wilmslow.

T70, I think brought by AHB. My brief note observed only ‟Red, 50% opaque. Very unctuous. An edge past its prime.”

Not brought by me - I supplied the Taylor 1980.

Bottled by Quellyn Roberts & Co Ltd of Chester. Mid-red, mature appearance; 50% opaque. Lovely mature strawberry nose with floral overtones. Sweet entry that has a lovely elegance and poise. Great palate presence with a spicy structure and masses of mature fruit and leather. The palate really is wonderful. The finish is delicious, long and powerful with sweet strawberry dominating over a dry and chalky length. Served blind this was guessed to be Gould Campbell 1970. 94/100. Decanted 6 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
