1963 Offley

Post by jdaw1 »

1963 Offley Boa Vista
To celebrate the Quinquagenary of AHB, he arranged a horizontal of 1963s in Wokingham at The Cantley House Hotel (evenings of Friday 11th and Saturday 12th October 2013) and The Walter Arms (lunch on Saturday 12th), and two evening Champagne tastings for our better halves. Sadly the venue was not able to accommodate all he would have liked to have invited. Diaries had been blocked since early 2012, and bottles had been gathered for most of a decade before that. A splendid weekend indeed.

Partial links:
Review of the event as a whole, which starts with a full set of links;
Placemats (and parameters by which constructed).

O63. Label says ‟Offley”; capsule says ‟Offley Boa Vista”. Make up your mind! Red, 30% opaque. Slightly odd palate, with some greenness that I couldn’t quite place. Spirit also showing. Nice enough, but past prime.

In the past they used Offley and Offley Boa Vista likewise. I does not say Quinta da Boa Vista, hence it does not imply that one of those has to be a SQVP.

I had the Offley (Boa Vista) 1963 numerous times as I bought two cases some years ago. It is always very fresh and flowery and has a mid-weight palate. I will post my tasting note on this one soon.

Btw Offley has just sold the Quinta da Boa Vista this year and is not allowed to use the name anymore.

That is the first label I have seen to date which says only "Offley" rather than "Offley Boa Vista" (where "Boa Vista" is usually in a smaller font).
I would assume that when bottled in the UK by Hedges and Butler that they could have chosen to put Offley Boa Vista on the label, since they put it on the capsule.

Very sound wine, perfectly mature. Possibly the best nose of all the 63s

light orange red, more towards red; strange stinky chemical smell close to TCA; very bitter and off in the finish; definitely something wrong with bt since normally Offley 1963 is a very good port.

Hedges and Butler. Medium-red with a copper edge; 40% opaque. Pleasant nose, but with some oxidation showing as a rosemary edge to the orange citrus. Antiseptic swamps the fruit on the palate with dry tannins holding the attention. Sour and bitter aftertaste, then a lengthy bitter finish. 85/100. Drunk 12-Oct-13. Decanted 3½ hours.
