The Topsy-Turvy Tasting at Ten, Belfast, 8th April 2014

Post by djewesbury »

A few friends are going to drink some bottles in Belfast, after the tasting of wood-aged Ports that djewesbury is running for the Northern Ireland Wine & Spirits Institute.

Likely to appear so far are Justin K, flash_uk and a port-interested friend, djewesbury and RB (SCP-DFB), with possibly one or two others.

Since this is only likely to commence at or around 10pm, when the formal tasting is concluded, we are going to keep our roster modest. That doesn't mean that we don't need placemats though.

Lesser rosters have had placemats.

The placemats were revised following a discussion here. They still follow what has been termed 'American' format (the first glass on the glasses page is the bottom left, which is the oldest port).

Perhaps you could rename it the "Topsy-Turvy Tasting at Ten" (preceded by the "Topsy-Turvy Tawny Tasting")?
I had a better suggestion on suitable parameter name for a combined Irish/American layout choice, but it far, far, far too politically incorrect.

Placemats updated once more to reflect new line-up (and further guest).

is going to be a blind half-bottle. (The extra guest will be drinking tiny (that is, ladylike) portions, so a full bottle would be excessive at this time of night.)

Won't be the only one having ladylike portions, work next day means no end of night uisce beatha either!

I think we will not be needing any uisce beatha after tonight…

2 x GC, V & (half bottle) decanted between 8.00 and 8.45 am.

- Staining around the selo and crust on the mouth but the cork was intact. Smell of alcohol but fruit also.
GC 85 - This was the easiest. Cork in one piece, sound, no very fine sediment (though maybe I just didn't bother to look closely enough).
GC 94 - Cork almost entirely clean; spun a little in the neck but came out in one piece eventually. In fact it looked new. But branded 1994 at the top. Lots of fine sediment, double decanted through a tea filter (thanks to AW77).
V 96 - Unexpectedly, this cork broke. It stuck to the sides, and I only steamed it once I'd already done most of the damage. But by pulling instead of screwing (…) I got it nearly all out. Also double decanted through a tea filter. Took aeons.

Review of the whole evening to follow when I feel a little more objective and less full of myself.
