1940 Cabral White Colheita

Post by djewesbury »

After the BBR Port Walk, some people still felt thirsty. We arrived at the Bung Hole in time to eat some steak burgers and open some bottles that were wrapped in tinfoil.

Honey brown in colour with a hint of green on the rim. Maderised nose, iodine and walnuts but on the palate this is full of honey and hazelnut oil. The aromatics are very pleasant, with a light body, gentle acidity and a slight oiliness. Big aftertaste with a long finish mixing a slight peanut-skin bitterness with gentle brown sugar. Clearly a colheita or tawny. Served blind, this was guessed to be Andresen 1982 colheita. 85/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Cabral 1940 Colheita (“PW”). Orange, 10% opaque. Nose very woody. Palate soft, non-marmalade orange, lovely soft tawny.

No idea, I'm afraid. The bottle was one of a handful of identical bottles of unknown colheita from auction; the only marking on the bottles was the date of 1940 stamped in the wax seal. The cork was short, and stamped "Porto Cabral" but no further date information.
