1994 Quinta do Noval

Post by djewesbury »

After the NIWSI tasting of wood-aged ports, some friends and their friends gathered around one table with some bottles decanted earlier that day:

Excellent fun, some of the ports were a little reluctant to come out to play but nonetheless much enjoyment had. Unfortunately I lost Justin K's decanting funnel in the Gents of the Belfast School of Art's library. The librarian thought it was one of the best lost property enquiries but regretted that it had not turned up. was a half-bottle of Ni97 which remained from a few bought a couple of years ago. The others had generally been OK but this one looked fishy.

Decanted at 4.30 pm, in the library of the Belfast College of Art, so about 6 hours or thereabouts.

I was keen to taste this again after the very strange showing at the Michael Schuster 1994 horizontal lately. i found it satisfyingly different, but it was hot and slightly vinegary in the nose all the same. In the mouth some dark chocolate, and in the back, heat. It was not very open; not going anywhere great at the minute. I understand the the end of the bottle (some was left) was very good the next evening.

805 opacity, dark red. Fruit, but quite closed on the nose. Slightly light on structure in the mouth, quickly to dry tannins. Pepper with faint toffee.

Much more drinkable that the N94 at the 1994 Walk earlier in the year, but didn't give me any hint that greatness was ahead. One to try again in a 5 years and see whether things have evolved.

I did leave my (limited) tasting notes on the table! However I do remember being very disappointed with this port at the tasting. Very closed nose, acidic (and not in a good way) taste.

24 hours later on my return home with a half bottle in tow Patricia poured herself a glass. She liked it and so I had to have some too! Nose opened up a lot, red berries, taste jam packed but plenty of tannin. Will not touch for a few years.

48 hours after Belfast tasting one glass left and I enjoyed it, tannins softened and nose opened up completely.

Won't be offloading this to Daniel!

We have found Justin's perfect port window! Youngish, with a long decant... Now I know what to get you in return for all that claret ;)
