2003 Niepoort LBV
Bottled 2007. Deep red, even on the wide transparent rim. Quite closed on the nose, showing just a little fruit and sage. Rather hollow on entry, with a nice texture but fruit that is slow to show. Softly tanninc at the core. The mid-palate fruit is youthful and slow to arrive, but when it arrives it is generous quantities. Wonderful on the finish, full in length, with soft tannins and big volume. The tannins are generous but balanced by the fruit. Very fine LBV, but in a closed phase. 86/100. Drunk 24-Apr-14 at BFT5.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

This was about 75% opaque and deep dark ruby. It was massy, chunky, a block of red fruit compressed in a bar, with very big tannins. Floral, rather than forest fruity.
