1945 Niepoort Unknown Blend

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

A blended wine experiment by Dirk's grandfather, from the 1945 vintage but the exact details have been lost in the mists of time.

Mature red appearance; gentle reductive nose in need of some time in the decanter to get back into balance. Slightly astringent but with plenty of fruit. Blank entry but a powerful mid-palate. Lovely gentle fruit, rich and mature with a lovely thickness to the texture. Luscious presence on the palate. Amazing intensity on the mid- to late-palate. Great chewy finish of grapefruit and licorice root. An amazing port. 95/100. Drunk 24-Jun-14. Pop 'n' pour.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
