1950 Cockburn

Post by djewesbury »

An Irish-bottled half bottle, drunk with (and very kindly supplied by) Justin K, last night. AHB tells me that he still remembers clearly the Cockburn '47 from this same batch that Justin opened at the first :tpf: Dublin offline in 2008!

The cork broke but when we extracted the lower half later it had no marks. Brown bottle, no label.

On decanting, this was an orangey-red, somewhat turbid but bright and not dirty.

D+0, lovely nose, really fine and luxurious, with oranges and Christmas cake (all the constituent parts save the icing: rich steeped fruits, spices, cakey sweetness, and marzipan).

At D+1 it was all spirit, very harsh, and we began to worry that it was falling apart on us, but at D+2 everything had integrated again; softer than the explosion of taste and aroma when opened, but beautifully round and smooth and with a lovely lingering, spiced orange finish.

It was gradually declining so we drank up respectfully. A very beautiful old port, 64 years from harvest and showing wonderfully. Thank you Justin!
