2009 Maynard LBV (unfiltered)

Post by djewesbury »

From Aldi in Maynooth, with assistance from Justin K. Made by Alváro Van Zeller.

Deep purple, light pink rim, about 80% opaque.

Nose quite simple, cedar and a little cigar ash but mainly just black cherries.

Fruit pleasant, light and acidic and not cloying though a little jammy. Very dry mid-palate, good tannins giving it structure in the front of the mouth, on the tongue, on the gums; a little pepperiness but no excessive heat. Finish is long, blackcurrants and acid, tannins.

It's perhaps a little bitter at present (bitter acid rather than a coffee bitterness) but it has good body and mouthfeel, good structure and some depth.

Aldi? This is the beginning of the end, if not the end itself.

Not at all. It's decent stuff. Search the forum for Justin's question about this bottle and Alex's informative reply.

Hm, why does Aldi have only Royal Oporto Ruby in it's homeland?

Apologies; it was merely a cri du coeur.

Sorry André! Perhaps Owen can find you a bottle or two in his local Aldi, when he's not watching The Only Way is Essex!

This tastes better a day later. It seems less jaggedly bitter and a little softer, still with good, well-defined acid though.
