1982 Andresen Colheita (bottled 2007)

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Bottled 2007. Distinct pale orange with still a hint of rose from the original red grapes. Delicate nose of brown sugar and Rum 'n' Raisin fudge. Thick and sweet in the mouth bringing many layers of dates, prunes, almonds and marmalade oranges. Unctious and delicious, very complex but with a beautiful balancing acidity. Huge length with lovely development on the aftertaste - an aftertaste dominated by dried cranberries and brown sugar. A very, very impressive wine offering extremely good value for money at £20 a bottle. 94/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Good to hear. I had this same port a couple of years ago, only not a recent bottling at the time. I remember it was dusty and flat and not a shadow of what you describe.

I was surprised and quite pleased to see what the bottling date was. Clearly this is a colheita to drink fresh and not one to tuck away and allow to develop in the bottle.

I opened a fresh bottle of this port last night - it is an absolutely brilliant example of a colheita. Perhpas the extra time in barrel from Ronnie's bottle has helped it to flesh out.

For those of you in the UK who want to try out a colheita, I urge you to find your nearest Laithwaites store and buy a bottle. To my mind, this represents excellent value for money - a better wine than the Taylor 20yo Tawny, 5 years of extra aging and for £5 less.
