1980 Smith Woodhouse

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

From a half bottle with a label stating it was imported by Premium Port Wines. Red cedar in colour, quite light in pigmentation; 40% opaque and darker now that when first decanted. Raisins and brown sugar on the nose, with a slight hint of bottle stink. On the palate this leads with sweetened rhubarb acidity and an unattractive burnt sugar. Unpleasantly bitter on the late palate. Fiery on the aftertaste, showing unalloyed brandy, followed by a dry finish of burnt sugar and powdery icing but good length. Well past its best and now tertiary and simple. 81/100. Drunk 15-Nov-14. Decanted 16 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

A cautionary tale. Don't leave those halves lying around too long…

PPW is their American importer/arm of SFE. Where did you buy that bottle?

It was one of the bottles I bought when I came over to see you a few years back. You kidnapped me and forced me to visit a bottle shop and to buy some port (entirely against my will, m'lud). I forget which shop it was, but it was the one which you said offered the best selection of ports round where you are. I bought a couple of these because they were good value.

Well, in that case lets say it was heat damaged and send it back
