1997 Quinta do Vesuvio

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Deep red, hints of browning, 90% opaque. Restrained fruit, sweet and a bit jammy with some great green leaf undertones. Hollow entry, dry and grippy tannins with late fruit. Not well balanced. Tannins dominate but there is plenty of fruit underneath. Fruit dominates the aftertaste and finish. All this port needs is time to get itself back into balance. 90/100.

The review thread contains a list of all the ports on show at the 2014 Berry Brothers Port Walk.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Alex is a little more optimistic than me. A very striking nose, scent leaping out of the glass, then a very empty palate. Rather simple, I could not make the leap between the nose and the palate, tannins are present but in that rather humdrum and disjointed way that the 97s go about everything. More like an 86 from me.

I wrote only very brief notes about some of the wines at the Port Walk; my note for this says, "A lovely wine - spiced fruit, with that big Vesuvio hit; really good".

smells of cherry and pepper (?), cherry in the mouth, smooth + lighter body, not really young any more, but far from mature, good
