1970 Gould Campbell

Pale rose red, 10% opaque. Wonderful spicy nose of mature fruit, full of warmth and Christmas cheer. Sweet and lovely fruit , mature and spicy with a great second surge of flavour on the mid-palate. Gently peppery on the aftertaste, long and lively on the finish. Very fine. 91/100.

I liked both of the 70s shown here. This was the better of the two, but not by so very much. Gentle and fragrant, this is a complete port with backbone and balance. But the minor wines of 1970 are starting to feel like ports with nowhere left to go.

Spiritous nose, with liquorice beneath. The mouth gave soft fruit but the ending was harsh. Preferred the Quarles.

Daniel and I disagree on this-I felt the GC70 to a lovely fully mature VP (with that slightly brown sugary aroma), wheras the QH70 was rather thin and way past its best (whatever its best was).

Didn't take a note on either of the GC70 or QH70. These bottles (QH70 and GC70) were at the end of the circuit, so I stood by, quality assuring them several times, also side-by-side, and concluded both were very nice equally.
