On Tuesday 31^st March 2015 we gathered in the Boot & Flogger for a tasting to say goodbye to Magnus, who is returning to Sweden. The theme was initially ‘Blind and informal’, to which DRT added some birthday 1965s.

G66 magnum, from our departing host. Dark red, 50% opaque. Wonderful full-weighted structure and balance. The fruit had faded. An excellent mature VP. And — whoopee! — in magnum. We mock-reprimanded Magnus for not having brought it in imperial. Tip-top Port.

Flash nailed it — we were impressed. Two others got the shipper (incl. me), but thought it younger than it was. Warre also guessed.

Everybody gave it points, most say first place: 18 out of a maximum possible 21, and so overwhelmingly WOTN.

DRT’s only TN of the evening: “really nice”.

From magnum. Bought from auction in Sweden and shipped across. Good occasion to finally open this.

Ruby core but perhaps a little paler than W66. This displayed all the attributes one wants in a port, mature fruit, secondary aromas of nut and marzipan, nicely warming and mellow spirit and a fantastically unctuous mouthfeel and texture. These grapes were not trod in vain. My WOTN.

This was fabulous Port, as my extensively detailed but now misplaced notes would confirm.

Not only was this the best Port on the table but it also had the benefit of being in a proper sized bottle.

Thanks to Magnus for sharing, which was very generous.

30% opacity, brown-red with a slight orange rim. Lovely mature smooth port, syrupy mouthfeel, full, wonderful length. Guessed by me to be G66. Woohoo!

Thank you Magnus. I hope all is well with you and the family now you are back in Sweden.

From magnum. Deep red, quite dark in colour but slightly cloudy which makes it opaque. Gentle nose, softly fruity; full of red cherries an a charming touch of mint. Rounded and sweet on the palate, rich and full of Christmas Cake and Christmas spices that combines to give a great mouthful of flavour. Huge aftertaste, big and chewy and powerful with lots of flowers and masses of fruit, supported by black chocolate tannins. Served blind, this was guessed to be Graham 1977. 94/100 and my wine of the night.
