Post by jdaw1 » 15:03 Fri 01 May 2015

On Tuesday 5th May 2015, the evening before The B.F.T., in the year of Fonseca’s 200th Bicentenary, we gathered in the Boot & Flogger and tasted some Fonsecas.

Fonseca Bincentenary Crusted. 100% opaque. Too young. It will be good, but it needs — and typically won’t be allowed — a decade in the cellar.

Bottled 2008.

Deep red with no purple, medium rim and an opaque centre. Powerful on the nose, full of fruit and flowers but with a fruity acidity adding a dose of astringency; the overall impression on the nose is slightly unbalanced. Youthful on the palate but with a mature tone to the fruit. The fruit is flavoured with the presence of cornflowers and esteva, balanced by pleasant and ripe acidity. There is a touch of burn from the acidity on the aftertaste which lasts into the finish before a long dark chocolate and sour red fruit melange takes over and persists for some time. 89/100. Decanted 25 hours.
Top Ports in 2018 (so far): Niepoort VV (1960's Bottling), Quinta do Noval Nacional 1994 and San Leonardo Very Old White (Bottled 2018)
2017 Ports of the year: Fonseca 1927 and Quinta do Noval 1927
