2007 Croft

Deep red in colour, verging on scarlet; opaque at the centre with a slightly cloudy and narrow transparent rim. Surprisingly hollow on the nose, showing very little other than some apple-mint. Gentle sweet fruit on the initial palate, then a wave of soft tannins that give a good structure. Very dry on the centre palate but there is generous fruit on the late palate. High levels of acidity support the fruit but the alcohol does show through and gives a hot and alcoholic aftertaste. The finish has a good length. Overall this port has all the components needed to be a great drink, but they are not in harmony. This is one to be left alone. Scored purely on the basis of drinking enjoyment today, I suspect that this will end up scoring much better than 86/100 when it recovers. 86/100. Drunk 23-Apr-15.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
