NV Marks and Spencer's Pink Port

Post by DRT »

This is what is known as taking one for the team...

Following the discussion on this thread I purchased a bottle of this stuff just for the fun of it.

The label advises "drink chilled or over ice". Port should not have to be chilled so the first tasting will not be.

No decanting and at room temperature
The colour is, unsuprisingly, very pink. The nose is alcoholic and more like a cheap white wine than anything else I could describe. No port-like smell at all. A thin, watery entry which thickens slightly in the mouth. Cough syrup taste which quickly turns onto a wincing shudder as you begin to swallow. The finish is hot, astringent and unfortunately long.

After a full 5 minutes since tasting this my mouth feels like I have been drinking cranberry juice.

Oh dear. What were Taylor Fladgate thinking of when they made this rubbish.

The bottle is now in the fridge. More later.

Derek

PS: You guys owe me one for this!!

8 Hours later - chilled
Not so harsh on the nose but still that cheap wine smell. The mouthfeel is thicker and smoother but the taste is the same.

This really is poor. If the intention was to try to draw a new audience into drinking port I think they should have tried making it taste like port. This doesn't.

Thanmakers of Cruz Ruby must be delighted that they no longer produce the worst port in the Douro. :P

Derek, my hero.

Maybe we got it all wrong and this is what the doctor orderes when you had a change-your-sex operation for desinfection purposes. That would at least be a reason for the tasting sensation.

Axel,

Hopefully the intention was to turn women into port drinkers and not port drinkers into women

What might they think about the number of brain cells and taste buds of a woman? They seem to be super-machos.

And what does it say about the port industrie? There must be real need. A bonmot of Frank Zappa (another hero!) comes to my mind. He said: "Jazz is not dead it just smells funny." Just change the the subject.
