1972 Offley

Post by jdaw1 »

JDAW’s other brother-in-law wanted to attend a tasting, so an emergency was declared, and held on Monday 8th February 2016 at the Boot & Flogger.

30% opacity, brown-orange. Very candied nose. Not the best of ports, but also, not undrinkable. Lacking structure and dominated by sugar. Fell apart after half and hour.

Burnt toffee colour with small particles of sediment; 30% opaque. Vanilla and lemon cream biscuits on the nose, soft and gentle. Smooth entry, softly fruity with a mild green-wood core. Good fruit, mild but supported by gentle acidity. An elegant and straightforward palate. Gentle flavours on the finish and a good length. PW rightly described this as "lemon and lavender". Nicely elegant. 85/100. 08-Feb-16. Decanted 1½ hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

OBV72 A bit cloudy with sediment after pouring as soon as DRT arrived. Slightly dull in flavour but still showing some good fruits and had some heat that helped a reasonably smooth if shortish finish. After an hour this port faded and had some thin wood flavour dominating, but the fruits returned at the end of the evening. This port proved to be controvertial with very low expectations which I feel it surpassed. I was keen to try as a 72 boy and I think it was a harmless pleasant port, and by no means a disaster.

O72. Pink-red, 40% opaque. Nose of saccharine. Palate thin, pleasant, some sugar. Harmless.
