1977 Sandeman

Post by jdaw1 »

A theme suggested by Flash: the ‘Sweet-Spot Vintages’, being 1966, 1970, and 1977, in each of Dow, Graham, Taylor, and Warre. So on Wednesday 17th June 2015 we gathered at Davy’s Woolgate.

S77 (originally ‘Mikey’). I recall this being good, but my tasting notes weren’t quite War and Peace: just one word, being “Spearmint”. Doubtless modern literary critics could write a thesis analysing the references within that wisdom.

Mature bricking red, 40% opaque. Burnt matches on the nose, really pronounced. Lightly flavoured entry with soft brown sugar and golden sultanas. Fragrant flower perfume but with a slightly watery texture that grows on the palate. Delicate and lovely. Slightly hot on the aftertaste with more delicious raisin and light brown sugar. Very lovely, mature and balanced with long length. Delicious. 91/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
