New York February 14 1970 VP Tasting

Post by jfacciol » 00:08 Tue 25 Dec 2007

If we do a 1970 tasting sometime in late winter-early spring 2008 (which I think would be interesting and for which I could supply all or most of the bottles, depending on what folks have), I would volunteer my home in Brooklyn, which is in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood and about a half-hour from mid-town Manhattan on the F line.

I have on hand Graham, Fonseca, Dow, Croft, Quinta do Cachao and Santos Junior (in magnums). I could also supply Delaforce, Kopke, Noval, Sandeman, Taylor and (of all the strange things) Taylor Quinta de Vargellas.

Fantastic. Yes please. Do start a new thread in the Organising off-lines section, proposing exactly this, and suggesting a date or dates after 11th February (’cause I’m in the UK and Boston first two weeks of February). Please PM a link to the new thread to those who might be interested, including jdaw1, AHB, Jeff, Raveesh, EricD, Bob Heckart, mittvin, mzimberg, seth1917, and hwangs.

From the UK it might be possible for me to bring a small number of 1970s: one or two of Cockburn, Croft, Delaforce, Hutcheson, Noval, Sandeman, Warre. To be discussed in your new thread.

After new thread is started I’ll delete this post, to keep this thread on-subject.
AHB is in Boston the second week of February: if it were soon after that weekend (being the 9th/10th February) it might be possible for him to play. But I’m in whenever it is.

I'd be very interested in attending a 1970 tasting when I am next in New York, although there are only the nights of Feb 13 and 14 that I could participate. Of these two dates, Feb 14 would be the best for me, but I can understand why that may not work for everyone!

Jay - I love the idea of tasting both the Taylor and Vargellas from 1970. If you would be happy to supply the bottles and allow me to contribute towards their cost, that would be really great.

After tomorrow, I will not own any 1970 vintage ports so won't be able to easily contribute a bottle of my own.

Count me in! I will be glad to adopt a bottle, as I currently do not own any 1970's. Feb 13 or 14th will probably work for me.

Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th February 2008

  • Wednesday 13th February 2008 highly likely to work for me.
  • Thursday 14th February 2008 is being broached, in a roundabout sort of way, with the boss.

And I now have, in classic female form, an answer that is yes and no and both and neither, allowing any change of mind to happen before, during or after the relevant day. So the 13th would probably be wiser.

Would love to attend but won't be able to confirm until a month or so prior due to unconfirmed work/travel schedule. May be in the City of Angels on business that week, but if not, either date suits.

I cannot make any Wednesday evening, as I teach then. 14 Feb would work for me as would later dates.

I've been looking for a previous reference, but cant find one. Apologies if I've missed it.

Have any of you brave male warriors considered that the 14th February is Valentines Day, and your better halves will probably delight at the thought of you lot having a boozy Do, rather than 'wine'ing and dining them?

Just a thought. I'd hate to see blood...

Subsequent posters have hinted at the problem (did you notice references to the “boss†?), and we’ve agreed on the 13th for a reason. So yes, we have “considered† it.

It will be delightful to meet Mrs Wiseman and to make her acquaintance on, of all days, St Valentine's Day 2008.

Sean C may also be available on Feb 14th in New York - would there be a seat available for him for the 1970 get together?

Thanks,

We are up to four confirmed with a possible fifth (Sean C). I can accommodate ten folks so there are six/five places left.

I see Jay, EricD, AHB, Mr & Mrs W. Which is five, and maybe Sean C. as a sixth. Jeff has yet to report back on the word from his boss, which, if he adopts my solution, might mean eight.

Mrs W now sends regrets, claiming that being with her mother outranks a port tasting. I don’t know; what’s the world coming to?; etc etc continued page 94.

Using my new spectacles I now see Jay, EricD, AHB, Mr W (aka jdaw1), and maybe Sean C as a fifth. Mr Ghi and proto-Mrs Ghi we know to be no-shows.

And, just because it encourages tingling of my taste buds, draft of placemats (therefore embodying an ultra vires selection).

Unfortunately, I cannot attend but if maximum coverage of the 1970 vintage is sought then I could sell someone a Dalva and a Royal Oporto (neither on the list above) at an extremely attractive price.

Getting them from the UK to NY would be someone else's issue.

Thank you. But we have plenty for the current number of people, and our host has capped that at ten. Fourteen singles and a magnum is as many different flavours as ten of us are likely to need in an evening.
