Wed 14 Oct - CSD's proper emergency

Post by AHB » 17:01 Wed 14 Oct 2015

Two bottles have been opened. The first is a Percy Fox bottled Warre 1970. The second was a superb Sandeman 1963 (thanks Rob!) bottled by BBR.

Rob also brought two other bottles: the first was a Warre 1960 (ulluged to mid-shoulder) bottled by the Swedish State Monopoly but offered for sale in the UK by Grants of St James; the second was a label-less bottle of Dow 1970 that could be identified by its capsule, although the capsule was worryingly stretched by a cork that appeared to have been pushed out by pressure in the bottle. These were opened when it became apparent that there was a shortage in the previous two bottles.

Tasting notes are now in the Tasting Notes forum.

Good work team.

One minor point of detail, isn't an emergency by definition "unplanned"?

Hmm. Yes and no. The emergency on 24th Oct is an "anticipated" emergency. Today's emergency is a proper emergency.

Incidentally, plans have changed. We are remaining at The Boot & Flogger until 10pm. Dinner is being served in about 30 minutes. Anyone who wants to join us is welcome - we are in the green room.

Odd, I didn't realize that Warre made a pink Port in 1970...

So the title of the review thread should be "CSD's emergency", thereby eliminating the apostrophe crime and correctly defining the nature of the emergency?

You are correct on both counts. Tomorrow, when I am sober, I will correct my egregious error. I will also delete any and all references to this faux pas which honourable members from Belfast will no doubt post in meaningless drivel as soon as they are able to.

My only feeble excuse is that I had eaten nothing since breakfast and consumed half a bottle of port when I suddenly thought it would be nice to share CSD's visit with fellow TPF members.

That is an entirely honourable and reasonable excuse. You are entirely absolved from your sins. Members from Belfast please note.

Best 'emergency' of my life. will seek them out more often!

Many thanks to RAYC and AHB for their splendid hospitality. Fresh from a successful holiday, Rob looks about 10 years younger from his dungeon days of S&M; AHB his inimitable self - this time making due with an innovative placemat.

Wines were fabulous - and not a single bottle of which is to be found in my new adopted home. 1960 & 1970 Warre, 1963 Sandeman, and 1970 Dow (a personal favorite) to finish. We did not have proper managerial ethos to conduct a voting, but I would have gone 70 D, 70 W and 63 S

Food was solid, and we had basically the entire downstairs to ourselves.

good living.

woo woo

Not having anyone with a structured approach or complete tasting mat pack, we did forget to score wine of the night. I would have gone S63, W70, D70, W60.
Rob didn't vote, nor stay long enough to taste the D70, but from his comments he would have voted W70, S63, W60.

That makes the WOTN scores:
  • Warre 1970 - 7 points
  • Sandeman 1963 - 6 points
  • Dow 1970 - 4 points
  • Warre 1960 - 1 point

I should also add that the Sandeman 1963 was served blind, allowing CSD and me to show off our experienced palates and identify the fine port which Rob had brought for us. My logic was that it was refined and elegant and had no clear flavour profile for me to identify - which led me to guess Warre. The age was mature but not over the top and from a good quality vintage so I guessed 1955.

CSD said "I don't know what the f**k this is - which means it's Graham 1977".

We scored null points.
