Some of the usual suspects gathered at the White Horse in Newport, Essex for the traditional Port Forum Christmas gathering to which were brought the traditional ‘Unknown shippers and their peculiar friends’. Delights of the evening included the very fine fillet steaks, the sparkling company of Jo (pub manager), Mel (on duty for the evening) and Jane the chef.

From a bottle which appeared to be from the last quarter of the 19th century. No branding was seen on the cork.

Russet brown colour, 30% opaque. Nosing of wood polish and lavender, a nose unlike any other port I have ever encountered. Very pronounced and slightly soapy. A gentle honey flavoured palate, soft and slightly soapy but not unpleasant. Modest on the palate with some oxidation showing but also plenty of fragrance, soap and grapefruit. A very pleasant finish, honeyed and soft with a flush of orange on the aftertaste. The nose of this port is odd and offputting, but the rest is much better.

2 hours later the soapiness had faded leaving lots of grapefruit in an otherwise dry port still being held together by its acidity. The aftertaste and finish were amazing, massive grapefruit and a chewing intensity. Not scored at this time. 81/100. 21-Dec-17. Decanted 2½ hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

35% opacity, brown orange. Nose of nettles, molasses and oranges. Smooth entry, some heat late palate, lively, good acidity oranges in the mouth.

Very fresh, light grapefruit(!) and light toffee elements to the taste, with some light orange coming through later; old and gentle, and an interesting bottle to taste; would love to know what it was.
