As George described it, a "curious" tasting.

WOTN =Calem 30YO
2nd =1993 Royal Tokaji Mézes Mály Aszú (50cl)
3rd = 1993 Barros LBV

The 93 ruby ports are certainly feeling a bit tired but still drinkable. The Barros was the clear standout here still with a bit of fruit hanging on in there.
The tawnys showed well but a resounding favourite from all in the Calem 30YO.
The remaining wines went from delicious (1993 Royal Tokaji Mézes Mály Aszú being a wonderous drink) to drinkable. Not a bad showing for some wines that should be past their drink by.

Curious, indeed. Some day I hope to get to taste a 1993 Quinta das Liceiras!

Was the order of tasting as listed in the first post? That might have impacted the perception of some of the wines.

The placemats were naively arranged. We all started with the white and reds which we presumed to be the most volatile. After that, tawnys (chilled) and rubies together. We finally served the tokaji and px chilled with dessert.

Like you Glenn I was very curious about the Licieras. I was very pleased to try it. I am truly grateful to Derek for most generously donating it. But on this showing there is no point in pretending it holds up its head against the median of the bottom quartile of mainstream 1994 VP.

I am glad to hear that the QdL93 proved to be of interest - I couldn't let :tpf:'s first 1993 tasting pass without it being in the lineup :660000:

Glenn, I have 22 more where that one came from so your hope might be realised one day :D

I'm curious how you managed to corner the market on the '93 Liceiras. Did someone make you an offer that you couldn't refuse?

It was a curious tasting but also one that I really enjoyed as with 2 exceptions I hadn't had any of these wines previously.

Given the reputation of the vintage and my expectations I was pleasantly surprised by the 93 Ports

AKZY - thank you for organising :)

It is my son's birth year and I managed to buy a case of halves from the owner of Quinta da Romaneira (which Q d Liceiras is part of) when I visited there in 2006.
