Post by nac »

2003 Wine Dinner
Boot & Flogger, Green Room
Monday 4th December 2023 - from 1700

Following on from some previous wine dinners and in advance of the 2004 Bordeaux dinner, have decided that this is a good opportunity to compare some wines that are now 20 years old.

The likely line-up is:

Krug Vintage

Bordeaux
Château de La Rivière [Riv]
Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste [GPL]
Château Léoville-Las-Cases [LLC]

Rhone / South of France
Mas de Daumas Gassac [MDG]
Hermitage, La Chapelle, Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné [LaC]

Portugal
Quinta Vale D. Maria (Douro) [VDM]
Prats and Symington Chryseia (Douro) [P&S]
Quinta de Chocapalha Tinto (Lisboa) [ChT]
Quinta de Chocapalha Cabernet Sauvignon (Lisboa) [ChC]

Sauternes
Château Bastor-Lamontagne (hlv) [BL]
Château Rieussec (hlv) [Riu]

Port to finish...
Fonseca 1966 [JDAW]

Now full, but one of the attendees might not be able to make it. Should know by the end of the week. If you're interested, let me know.

Been buying it for years from C&B. Great value and extremely reliable. Had a bottle of the 2003 recently and it’s still very very good.

As discussed, a different pattern for each of the wine groups would be good. I've also added suggested abbreviations to the list on the first post.

Food order for me please - this is my one and only Christmas dinner cooked for me by someone else:
Starter - Davy's pigs in blankets with cranberry dipping sauce
Main - Roast turkey, with all the trimmings (including more pigs in blankets)
Dessert - Chocolate brownie
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Julian (quite sensibly) suggested that given the volume of wine being consumed it might be a good idea to have something eat eat alongside the Champagne. How about we order a couple of the pigs-in-blankets and some chips as a pre-starter starter?

I've been less than overwhelmed by the canapes we've previously had, so this is maybe an good alternative?

EARLY I KNOW… but can I put myself down for the 2005 Wine Dinner as a place or reserve if places carry over 😀 I see that this listed as a future event and that will give me sufficient time to ink it in to the diary. My hope is to get into next years too but that is dependent on variables where as 2025 I can definitely plan for. Much thanks if this is possible.

I think that is an excellent suggestion. We could aim for pre-starter starters at 17.15 and dinner at 18.30 perhaps?

I fourth the suggestion of pigs in blankets and chips as a pre-starter

Ham hock terrine
Roast turkey (no stuffing, no pig in blanket* please)
Treacle tart (no clotted cream please)

*I will have eaten too much pig already by then

I will copy Alex on the starter front and have pigs in blankets followed by the sirloin steak and fries with red cabbage.
Thanks
