To record tasting notes and thoughts on fortified wines we might try which do not come from the demarcated region of the Douro Valley

NV Jose Maria da Fonseca Bastardinho de Azeitao Vinho Licoroso 30YO

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Jose Maria Fonseca, bar steward de Azeitão Vinho Licoroso 30YO, bottled in half bottle. From a vineyard on the south bank of the Tagus, now built over as part of the expansion of the town of Lavradio in 1984, matured in the cellars in Azeitão. Bottling date not known. Deep brown colour, dried fruit and honey on the nose. Honeyed on the nose and palate like a Setúbal but with a good acidity, bitter edges and a sweet core giving a much more balanced and complete wine than a muscadelle of the same age. Wonderful long finish of dried fruit, grapefruit and brown sugar. Such a delight to taste a wine which can no longer be made.  93/100. Dunk 03-Mar-24. Pop 'n' pour.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
