Paris, Friday 11th and Saturday 12th September 2009

Post by jdaw1 »

Paris, starting late on Friday 11th September 2009, and continuing from the morning of Saturday 12th, DRT will be joining JDAW in Paris, for the purpose of consuming some port. Theme: what JDAW has and DRT brings.

Others welcome, subject to wifely approval.

Notification sent to Paris tasters.

So far it’s JDAW, DRT, and a Frenchman (shock horror scandal!) who goes by the name of Laurent.

My wife has not approved, citing domestic duties related to (a) decorating the house after the build has been completed and (b) our wedding anniversary.

Perhaps we could make another attempt at a Skype-linked virtual offline open to all, regardless of geography.

First draft of placemats, including Alex B. please put the placename within sight of camera, so that we don’t become confused.

It might be better to use iChat, as that has free multi-person conferencing.

I can't help thinking that the placemats would look much better if places 5 and 6 contained G63 and D63 - but I have neither available

With a little trip to the storage site, I might be able to get a decent approximation to the wines on the TM. Would a Lomelino Bual 1869 be an acceptable substitute for the 1870 Sercial? Fonseca for the Croft?

Sadly, I recently drank my last loose bottle of the SWM'88 so will have to have an empty space where you have a glass.

And since there is only one of me, I will show restraint. Where you have a(nother) small horizontal from 1977, I shall restrict myself to only one - probably the Dow.

Your substitutes are entirely acceptable. Would you like your own one-man placemat?

Thank you, but no. I shall use the official placemat but will be prepared to be flexable and adaptible.

The bottles are packed:

Croft 1963
Croft 1977
Dow 1977
Graham 1977
SW Madalena 1988

+4 bottles for Glenn.

Do we need more?

On the presumption that I am allowed to join this offline remotely, at what time should I be attempting to have my computer set up, with camera and microphone connected and tasting mat filled?

I am in the hands of my host on this one. The most likely answer is: "when SCP-DFF tells us we are allowed to start".

Derek: we need to agree a start time. Laurent probably can’t join us until after a Saturday lunch appointment can we wait that long? Would 11:30 local time be civilised? Continuing until the wee hours some while later?

I am happy to be instructed when to start and when to finish.

AHB has very kindly provided me with 120mls from a significant contribution to the line-up so at least part of the event needs to overlap with a time that AHB is available to join us. Ideally this should be prior to any of us falling asleep.

Am I right in thinking that 11:30 in Paris = 10:30 in Wokingham? If so, that is probably a bit early for AHB but not too early for me. I think we need to plan on this being a slow event, possibly involving beer and cow flesh to stem the flow of port during the first few hours?

Central Wokingham Time, sure. But I think that’s 6pm Eastern Wokingham Time.

Sample bottles: you will have to bring some empties if you will need more than most of my remaining forty-nine. If you won’t need much more than a couple of dozen, no need to bring empties.

Around 30-60 minutes after dusk, Wokingham time (unless raining) is likely to be the earliest that other duties will permit me to log on to Skype and start drinking. This would be approximately 9pm in Wokingham. Will you still be awake?

(This applies to both Friday and Saturday.)

I shall raise a glass to you with the new Assistant Miltary Attache to the British Embassy in Kiev who is staying with us this weekend! She likes port and may not see much of it for the next 2 years unless the embassy is well stocked!

1. Suggest "AHB?"
2. Noted
3. I would prefer lager to cider if that is possible, please.
