Quinta prepositions

Post by jdaw1 »

Is it reliably possible to deduce, from the name of a Quinta, which preposition (‟do”, ‟da”, ‟de”, ‟dos”, other) it would take? Is there a rule, whether or not complicated, that can be applied?

Wiki suggests not when translating to English.

You forgot "das".

The simple answer is no. The preposition is based on the gender of the noun, and there is no guaranteed rule as to which words are male, female, and neutral.

Having learned just a very small amount of Portuguese, though, I seem to have pretty good luck when guessing. I'm sure some of that is simply having seen lots of different names many times, but part of it also probably derives from having had to learn the same sort of thing in German with der, die, and das.

Only relevant to Graham Quinta das Lages, Royal Oporto Quinta das Carvalhas, Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias, and Quinta das Liceiras, none of which really count, so I wrapped it in to ‟other”.
I believe that "das" is the only other preposition available, but I'm not 100% certain.

Some meaningless argument split by jdaw1 into Quinta prepositions (ℵ0).
